
The mountain of Montserrat is a kind of place of power. Peculiar eroded rocks, old monasteries, breathtaking views from a height of more than 1000m above sea level. That’s why the crowds of tourists love this place. Climbers also appeared here a long time ago. Rock folds and pillars hide a huge number of excellent routes. However, many historical sectors are currently inaccessible due to dense vegetation. In our guidebook there are only those with real approaches. Rock type - conglomerate. The most walls are facing north. Most comfortable climbing season is spring and fall. The area is well suited for both beginners and experienced climbers. Most sectors are along the road. Approaches are mostly very short (less than 5 minutes).
Area is in the natural park "Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat”. There are many Refugis in the park, providing cheap accommodation for climbers. You can also book a room in the monastery.
Approach
By car from Barcelona (about 50 km). In addition you can get there by train. There are two different ways to get up the Montserrat, the cable car or the rack railway "Cremallera".
Get off at the subway station in the Plaça Espanya train the FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat) in the R5 line in the direction of Manresa. The train departs hourly from 08:36.
If you would like to take the cable car, you need to get off the train at the station "Aeri de Montserrat". For the rack railway you need to stay on the train for one more stop "Monistrol de Montserrat". From there, every 20 minutes a rack railway runs up to Montserrat, directly to the monastery.
