Buttermik Country - one of the best bouldering areas in California and worldwide! The first rocks were climbed in Joshua Tree Park and in Buttermilk County.

It includes the Western edge of the Owens valley near Bishop, California, in the Eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is a sunny slope under an impressive background of high peaks, glacial with a scattering of granite boulders. The biggest of them are known throughout the climbing world for their problems – Grandma and Grandpa Peabody. These are two parts of a broken giant rock, the silhouette of which is long been a hallmark of this bouldering country.

Quartz monzonite very quickly erases the skin of the fingers, take the hand patch with you. Take all available crash pads, some lines are very high! The landing places are very good and smooth, sandy. But before you start, make sure you understand how you will get down. There are boulders having a tricky descent or the need to jump to the ground.

This place has a very fragile ecosystem. Be careful not to walk out of the path and not to put the crashpads on the grass. In the warm season there are a lot of rattlesnakes, be careful yourself and watch your dogs. There are free campsites nearby so please do not camp in the Parking areas. Try to leave as few traces of stay as possible in this amazing place!

In spring the slope quickly thaws, but the road is washed away by spring streams for a long time. Not every car can get to there. When the road dries up, it gets too dusty. Locals walk and ride bicycles here. Observe the speed limit of 25 miles per hour and do not raise dust.
